The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Funds Astrophysics R&D for Next Generation Cargo Scanner: The Multi-View CT™

Astrophysics was recently awarded additional funding by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) ( under contract number 70RSAT18CB0000021 to develop and build the next generation cargo pallet scanner: the Multi-View CT™ 200 kV. Building on our revolutionary Multi-View CT™ 450kV technology, the Multi-View CT™ 200kV delivers unrivaled x-ray and CT imaging with a 200kV generator to provide a more economical air cargo solution.

The Astrophysics Multi-View CT™ is the world’s first 3D CT cargo system. Combining multi-view x-ray and high-speed computed tomography, this machine can display image resolution similar to what is widely used for CT scans in the medical field. Advancing cargo screening around the world, the MVCT identifies hidden threats not visible using conventional dual-view x-ray scanning technology. The Multi-View CT™ allows freight forwarders, airlines, and government agencies to perform rapid and effective cargo inspections, providing the ultimate in imaging detection.

DHS S&T and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are collaborating to address current air cargo screening challenges. U.S. federal law requires air cargo be screened at the same level as commercial checked baggage.  However, this is not possible with existing x-ray technology. After the terrorist attacks in 2001, TSA implemented the mandate to screen all commercial planes using single-view x-ray technology. Since terrorism has evolved, so have the requirements for airlines.  Since 2018, TSA requires carry-on and checked baggage be screened with at least dual view x-ray technology, while many airports have moved to CT checkpoint technology. Effective January 1, 2021, the TSA requirement for air cargo will be upgraded from single view to dual view x-ray technology. This heightened TSA requirement for air cargo reflects the aviation industry’s growing concern over cargo security threats and the need for more advanced technology to match checkpoint security offerings. The MVCT is the perfect solution to the ever-changing needs of the air cargo screening industry.

The Multi-View CT™ is a true evolution in air cargo screening technology. The size difference between small carry-on and checked baggage vs large air cargo pallets signifies a challenge without needing to break bulk. The Multi-View CT™ provides an unprecedented level of pallet visibility and imaging resolution and detail, allowing operators to identify threats anywhere in the pallet with precision and accuracy.

This  contract extends additional funding to develop and prepare the Multi-View CT™ 200kV for widespread commercial applications, focusing on ruggedization, economies of scale, and economical solutions.
